Hook

Definition
The hook is the half-point added to point spreads and totals to eliminate pushes. Instead of -3, you'll see -3.5. That extra half-point (the hook) ensures there's always a winner and loser on the bet. Buying or selling the hook is a common betting strategy.
Example

The line is Patriots -3.5 (-110). The '.5' is the hook. If you think this game could land on exactly 3, you might 'buy the hook' to get -3 at -120, protecting against a push.

Common Questions

It depends on how often you expect the game to land on that exact number. Key numbers in NFL (3, 7, 10) are worth buying. Random numbers are usually not worth the extra juice.

Typically 10-20 cents of juice. Moving from -3.5 (-110) to -3 might cost -120 or -125. Around key numbers like 3 and 7, it can cost more.
